Chair Making 101

Windsor chairs are a sign of beauty and style that have captured imaginations for more than 200 years. Many amateur woodworkers have admired them and dreamed about what the old chair masters had to do working in their Philadelphia shops making these masterpieces.

Martin’s Chair craftsmen are now teaching Windsor chair making classes at our New Holland, Pennsylvania workshop. Our chairs can be found at Colonial Williamsburg and other fine museums around the country. Working with us you can build your own masterpiece under our supervision.  Other Windsor chair making classes require you to spend a week learning to make their chairs and buying expensive specialized tools used only for chair making. You will work with the same excellent chair components we use in our shop to make our own famous chairs.

Our 101 curriculum is scheduled on a Saturday morning and completed with a light lunch by early afternoon around 1 PM. Each student makes their own heirloom and takes their completed “unfinished” chair with him or her when they leave. If you would like, our professional finishers could finish your Windsor chair for an additional charge.
